Ok folks, not only am I a HUGE Star Wars fan I am a HUGE fan of John Carpenter. Some of you might not know who that is....well you should acquaint yourself with him. You've probably known of him, but didn't realize it. He's an american director who had made some classic films such as Halloween, The Fog, Assault on Precinct 13, Escape from New York, The Thing, Big Trouble in Little China, and a host of others. The great thing about JC is that not only is he a great writer / director, he is also a great composer.
He has composed a lot of the music that appears in his films. He has a very unique and memorable style. I have been a fan since I was a kid. I would definitely recommend that you watch what I like to call "The Holy Trinity of John Carpenter Films" starring Kurt Russell. These are basically some of the coolest films in my humble opinion, that I always tell folks to start from. Then move on to the others.
The first one: Escape From New York (1981) R This one is set in a dystopian future where an ex-military man (Russell) Snake is given a chance to regain his freedom by doing a job saving the president from a prison. The movie is a bit dated today, but it is a super cool movie. Lots of great actors. Kurt Russell, Lee Van Cleef, Donald Pleasence, Ernest Borgnine, Isaac Hayes, Adrienne Barbeau, and Harry Dean Stanton. Great cast and a good watch.
The second one: John Carpenter's The Thing (1982) R This is a remake of "The Thing From Another World" originally made in 1951. John Carpenter wanted to make a modern day version of this movie to update it a bit. There was another "prequel" to JC's version made in 2011 (Also a a fun watch). John Carpenter's version is pretty close to the original, but a hell of a lot scarier. Basically you have an antarctic base camp of scientists, doctors, pilot (Kurt Russell), and other workers who come in contact with an alien entity. It is a no holds barred thriller of a movie. Get you some popcorn and get ready to be scared. The cast includes Kurt Russell, Wilford Brimley, T.K. Carter, David Clennon, Keith David, Richard A. Dysart, Charles Hallahan, Peter Maloney, Richard Masur, Joel Polis, Donald Moffat, and Thomas G. Waites.
The third one: Big Trouble in Little China (1986) PG-13
Ok this one is completely different from the last two. It is a campy, over the top, kung fu, sorcerers, monsters, and all kinds of crazy stuff action / comedy. If you don't laugh, then there is something seriously wrong with you. This movie is a wild ride from start to finish. It doesn't take long for things to get going. There is a great cast of folks in this movie and some before they were huge in the business. The cast includes Kurt Russell, Kim Cattrall, Dennis Dun, Victor Wong, and James Hong. This is a fun movie and you can watch it with your kids unlike the previous two, unless you're like me and both of your kids are grown. Well there you have it folks. My Holy Trinity of John Carpenter Movies. Like I said, I would start here and move on to other JC movies. He has a ton of great material and great music. You can check him out on iTunes or Spotify. Thanks for reading and I hope that this excited you to go watch some of these great movies. Enjoy The Movies, Darth Skippy
